In contrast to his constant travels during 2011, Grant has been working every day of the new year in the North Carolina race shop.He has been preparing the Bragg Racing NASCAR Camping World Truck for the February 24th season debut at Daytona Speedway.
In addition to making the truck race ready, he has been spending time on the phone making contacts with potential sponsors for additional races beyond Daytona. “George and Josh Bragg want to race as many Truck races as possible in 2012. Our team does more with limited resources than any other organization in NASCAR. We can give sponsors more bang for their buck than other teams. We run up front in the Truck series and hopefully we can find some sponsors to allow us to feature them in the nationally televised races.”
The speedway truck which will be raced at Daytona was last on the track at Talladega a few months ago. With drafting help,Grant took the race truck to 6th place where his drafting partner abandoned him, relegating Grant to a 12th place finish.Grant showed that he could hold his own in the dangerous and unpredictable 2 truck drafts at the world’s fastest speedway. “There is no doubt that we can take this truck to the front at Daytona and hopefully we will get the opportunity to race at Martinsville and the other tracks on the 2012 NASCAR Truck schedule.”

Grant has been on the move constantly since last week’s 8th place finish in the 44th Snowball Derby in Pensacola. The next day he drove home to North Carolina where he is helping his friend and long time crewman Zach Ralston prepare an ARCA car to race at Daytona in February.

From Charlotte, Grant flew to Indianapolis for the International Motorsports trade show Thursday and Friday. He drove to the Cincinnati area Friday evening for Saturday’s ARCA banquet which honored the top 10 season points drivers and owners. He and car owner Mike Allgaier enjoyed the evening and reflected on a good season in the ARCA series.

Grant slept a few hours after the banquet, rising in the early hours Sunday to drive back to Indianapolis to catch a 6 a.m. flight to Panama City. He and Jason Tunnell then drove to Gulf County Florida, making a personal appearance with the Bragg Racing NASCAR Camping World Truck in Port St. Joe. “We wanted to show our appreciation for Gulf County’s sponsorship at Talladega and I was glad to be in Florida.”

After an early morning radio interview in Panama City today, Grant heads back to Charlotte to help Zach put his ARCA car in shape for testing this weekend. Grant will help Zach at the ARCA open test session at Daytona International Speedway Friday through Sunday. Live timing and scoring of the test session can be found at www.arcaracing.com .

Bubba Pollard, winner of 19 late model races this year, blew the doors off Snowball Derby qualifying Friday night. He set a new track record and led the fastest group of Derby cars ever, in a night of high speeds on the 1/2 mile oval. Grant qualified the Triple K Construction/Baldwin County Sewer Service/Preble-Rish Monte Carlo 10th of the 60 racers trying to make the field for Sunday’s 44th Snowball Derby.

“We thought we would have a top 5 qualifier, but the car handles well and will be good in the race. I would rather start on the inside lane, but we will move down to the bottom groove when we can find a good spot after the green flag waves.”

Grant will be in good (and fast) company on the starting grid. Two time Derby winner Augie Grill will be immediately in front of Grant to begin the race, with Chase Elliott on Grant’s inside. Last year’s Derby winner Johanna Long will start 13th, with Cup star David Ragan posting a 17th qualifying spot. 2 time Derby pole winner Cale Gale will begin the race in 23th position. With only about 1/2 second separating the pole sitter from the 30th qualifier, it is apparent that any racer good enough to start the Derby has the ability and machine to win.

The 300 lap race begins at 2 p.m. CST Sunday, with live audio and text available through www.Speed51.com .

GRANT TESTING AT 5 FLAGS TODAY

The last event on the 2011 racing calendar is almost here. The 44th Snowball Derby, the most important short track stock car race in the country, is set for Sunday December 4th at Pensacola’s 5 Flags Speedway. Racers from all over the country (and a few from Canada) are heading to Florida to try to make the field for Sunday’s race.

For the first time, Grant has a guaranteed starting position in the Derby field. The top 2 Blizzard Series points drivers are awarded provisional starting slots at the back of the Derby grid. While Grant and the Bragg Racing crew want to start the race from the front, a lot of pressure is removed in knowing the #82 will make the field. A lot of good cars are sent home after Friday night qualifying, as only the best of the best make it into the Derby. Virtually every driver who qualifies for Sunday’s race is either a track or series champion or has won a big race previously, and can win the Derby. NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide & Truck drivers are entered, as they know the Derby trophy is something every stock car driver longs for.

Grant has been on the pole and has finished 2nd in the past. The only think he hasn’t accomplished in the Derby contests is finishing first. He and the Bragg crew will be testing the car at the speedway today,as they know that Thursday and Friday practice is both limited and dangerous. “Every year several cars are crashed during practice, as we all know the stakes are high in this last race of the year. I hope we can get the car close to qualifying trim today and then work on the race set up for the grueling 300 lap race.”

For more information on the Derby, including the schedule of activities which begin Wednesday evening, visit www.snowballderby.com and www.speed51.com .

Grant spent yesterday testing David Ragan’s Super Late Model car at Pensacola’s 5 Flags Speedway. David was racing his Sprint Cup UPS car at Phoenix. “David is not only my landlord, he is a good friend. I am always happy to get in a race car and when my shop landlord asks me to help him, I will do most anything to avoid eviction.” Ragan will be racing against Grant in the 44th Snowball Derby at Pensacola December 4th. Grant will be testing his Derby ride (Bragg Racing #82) the day after Thanksgiving. After a full afternoon of testing, Grant flew back to North Carolina to help the Sinica crew finish preparations on the Cup car. The race car is due to leave Charlotte Tuesday evening, with Grant heading south Thursday.

From the 1/2 mile track in north Florida, Grant will next compete on the banked speedway at Homestead, for the final Sprint Cup race of the year. Grant will attempt to qualify the Sinica Motorsports Chevrolet Impala for next Sunday’s race. Because the new race team has no owner points, Grant will be required to post a qualifying time fast enough to beat out several other “go or go homers” who will be trying to make the race. Cup practice on Friday and Saturday and qualifying on Saturday will be televised live on Speed TV. For a complete schedule of the Homestead Championship Weekend activities, visit www.jayski.com .
