Hewes Concrete Construction Inc. will be the primary sponsor for the Sinica Motorsports Sprint Cup entry for NASCAR Championship Weekend at Homestead Speedway. The Fort Wayne, Indiana company, which provides a wide array of concrete services, specializes in concrete polishing which hardens the surface of concrete floors, sealing out contaminants and making the concrete stronger.

Grant will be driving the #93 Chevrolet Impala at Homestead, hoping to make the field for the final NASCAR Sprint Cup race of the season. Grant and Sinica Motorsports know that it is extremely difficult for a new team to make a race where they don’t have owner points built up and where they will be competing against major competition to even win a place on the starting grid for the Sunday November 20th race. “We will use Homestead to get a head start on the 2012 Cup season. Hewes Concrete is providing us with the solid footing for our Cup team. Gary Hewes and his company know what a strong foundation means and we hope to help them in their business expansion.”

Grant’s first trip to the 1/2 mile Martinsville Speedway “paper clip” was an eventful one this past weekend. Grant and the Allgaier Motorsports crew finished building the NASCAR Camping World truck late Wednesday night and were hustling all weekend.

Because the #36 truck had not been raced previously and there were no owner points to guarantee a starting position, Grant had to qualify on time or the team would not have made the race. The weather forecast was for rain and it appeared doubtful that qualifying would take place. If there had been no qualifying, the #36 would have been excluded from the field. Although Cup qualifying was canceled, the skies cleared early Saturday morning to allow time trials. Grant was one of the first racers to qualify, with later qualifying resulting in improved times due to the track heating up and rubber being placed on the “green” track which had been washed of rubber by Friday’s rains. Grant made the race, starting 29th of the 36 trucks on the grid.

Grant managed to avoid the numerous wrecks which occurred during (and even after) the 200 lap race. He advanced steadily to 12th position just a few laps from the checkered flag. On the subsequent restart, he was on the outside and was pushed high on the track. Just as he was accelerating to pass a truck inside of him, the truck in front of him got loose and began to spin. Grant had to lift from the accelerator to prevent plowing into the truck in front, causing the truck behind him to bump the #36. During that brief time,a pack of trucks passed Grant on the inside. He managed to take back a few more positions, but finished 20th.

“We had a 10th place truck, but I found out first hand what I had seen on television for years. Martinsville is fun and frustrating and is totally different from Talladega. I appreciate Mike Allgaier and his crew working so hard to make this race. We brought the truck home in one piece, which is more than a lot of teams could say Saturday evening. I believe the Allgaier team now has a good short track truck which can compete for a win next year.”

While Alabama farmers and ranchers badly need rainfall, the race track at Martinsville, Virginia may receive a drenching today and tomorrow. If tomorrow’s qualifying session is washed out, Grant and the Allgaier race team will head back to Charlotte without competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck race. There are 40 entries to fill 36 starting positions in Saturday’s contest. When qualifying is rained out, the race starting positions are set by truck owner season points. Because the Allgaier team has not raced the #36 truck this year, and the team has no owner points, Grant’s team would not start the race. At this time, rain chances are set at 90% today and tomorrow. For up to date information on schedule changes and whether or not the field will be set by points, go to www.jayski.com.
RACE TRUCK READY
FOR MARTINSVILLE

Many race fans have complained about last Sunday’s Cup race at Talladega, with 2 car drafting being unpopular with drivers and spectators. The truck drafting is not as pervasive or extensive because the front and back bumpers of the trucks do not “match up” easily. It is harder (and more dangerous) to draft with the trucks. Grant and Todd Bodine were one of only a few tandems to manage to stay together for multiple laps without wrecking at Talladega. As a savvy race fan, 3 year old Mary Nelson Beavers, a veteran of 4 races, has developed a system for watching restrictor plate races. She watches the first 10 laps, then naps until the last 10 laps when things get racy. The Mary Nelson Rule, as it will be known in NASCAR, will apply to superspeedway races until NASCAR figures out how to break up the 2 car drafts. The Rule will not be applicable this weekend, as there will not be any “riding around” or taking it easy during the Saturday truck or the Sunday Cup races. The 1/2 mile paper clip shaped track at Martinsville will see constant banging and bumping, with drivers’ tempers likely to result in bent sheet metal and chrome horns being blown during the races.

At this point, the truck series schedule for the weekend is as follows:
Friday 10/28—10 a.m.–practice
1p.m.—final practice (Speed TV)
Saturday 10/29–9:30 a.m.–qualifying(Speed TV)
1 p.m. –race (Speed TV)

Following a 12th place finish at the world’s fastest speedway in Talladega, Grant will race the #36 truck for Allgaier Motorsports this weekend in Martinsville, Virginia. The short track, nicknamed “the paper clip” is a test of both driver and machine. Instead of the usual oval configuration, Martinsville features 2 straight stretches with tight turns which require heavy braking, followed by immediate acceleration down the front and back stretches. To make things even more difficult, pit road is narrow, curved and dangerous. All this will make for exciting racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck series Saturday.

Speed TV will carry Friday’s final practice session tomorrow at 1 p.m. CDT. Saturday morning’s qualifying session will not be broadcast. The television pre-race show begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, followed immediately by the race which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. CDT.
